2021 Kernza® Field Days
Throughout July and August, farmers and research partners are hosting in-person field days across Minnesota and Wisconsin and virtual field days featuring farms in Kansas and Montana. Most field days are open to the public with advance registration.
Kernza, the first commercially available perennial grain in the US, prevents erosion, encourages water retention, and sequesters carbon on farms. Supply chain partners are also turning Kernza into tasty products such as beer, bread, and baked goods that attendees can sample at many of this summer’s field days.
More information on each field day and the schedule of events is as follows:
July 8 - Madison, MN
A-Frame Farm is hosting a tour of Kernza production and an introduction of the Perennial Promise Growers Co-op. More information and registration
July 17 - Cold Spring, MN
July 19 - St. Paul, MN
Minnesota legislators and agency leads will join researchers for an invite-only field day on the University of Minnesota campus.
July 28 - Goodhue, MN
A tour of Kaleb Anderson's farm, coordinated by Clean River Partners, will include dinner, time to socialize, and a chance to try various Kernza products after the tour. More information and registration
August 19 - Rosholt, MN
Stay tuned for a field day hosted by Stearns County SWCD Administrator, Dennis Fuchs, and Pope Soil & Water Conservation District Manager, Holly Kovarik.
August 25 - Arlington, WI
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with the Arlington Agricultural Research Station, will feature Kernza at their annual field day. More information
Virtual Field Days
Stay tuned for virtual field days featuring farms in Kansas and Montana coordinated by The Land Institute.
“Field Days aren’t just for farmers. Millers, bakers, brewers, chefs, processors and the curious public are encouraged to come out and learn more about economic, environmental and community benefits of Kernza,” says Constance Carlson from the UMN Forever Green Initiative. “This year, many of the scheduled field days also feature companies using Kernza and the products they are making, giving attendees the opportunity to sample the many delicious ways Kernza is making it into our food system.”
Luke Peterson of A-Frame Farm, the host site of the first field day on July 8, says, “Adding Kernza to the farm has added diversity and flexibility into my rotation. Perennials are vital to an organic farm to break weed and pest cycles. The root structure breaks up compacted soil and increases water infiltration."
We encourage the public to register for a Kernza field day this summer to see this new crop, try products featuring Kernza, and see what growers, industry, and researchers are doing to expand this new perennial grain on the landscape.
The KernzaⓇCAP project officially launched on September 1st, 2020. More information on Kernza, the project partners, updates and reports on research findings, additional press materials, and field day demonstration information can be found on kernza.org/kernzacap.
